There's something oddly fitting about having one of the few Epic Fail movie experiences that I've had in my life (in this case, having the projector 'refuse to turn on' wtf and the showing being cancelled) be the time I'm trying to go see 2012. Aggravating.
But hay, got free re-admit tickets to any Regal theater at any time for any movie, so that's something. |

So, I went to see Okuribito (送り人), aka Departures at my town's little Indie film theater this afternoon. I'd watched a trailer for it a few months ago after hearing that it won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, but it had then fallen off my radar, until it startled me by randomly popping up in the paper's movie listings. I'm really glad I got a chance to go see it, because it was awesome.
It's been a long time since I was so moved by a film. There were several bits where practically the whole theater was sniffling. I mean, a lot of the movie was about various funerals so it's not that surprising, but it also managed to be insanely funny in other parts, and the entire story was told with this sort of... heartfelt genuineness that drew me in completely. Plus, the score had tons of awesome cello music - some of it being played by the main character - which is always an instant zap to my Inner Happy Music Place.
In conclusion, go see it! It is an amazing and wonderful movie.

So I had no idea that Helen Thomas and Barack Obama had the same birthday. Apparently he gave her cupcakes with a single candle on them and sang her the happy birthday song in the White House press room today.
I frickin' love this Administration, and Helen Thomas rocks my socks no matter what time of year it is.
Happy Birthday, awesome people. |

It remains spider season, and I continue to traumatize them by sticking them in containers.
Today's catch: a Cat Faced Spider ! It's probably the biggest spider I've ever seen outside of the time I found a Hobo spider in my room: about 1.2 cm from chelicerae to abdomen tip, and one of its legs stretched out is probably about 2 cm. It's not venomous in the least, and it's actually pretty cute - the legs are all striped and fuzzy and the two protuberances on its back really to make it look like it has a itty bitty kitty face riding around on its butt, watching its back for it.
Since it's beneficial to have it in your garden as it eats a bunch of different pest bugs, I'll probably release it back into the wild tomorrow at work. My co-workers will most likely not be as thrilled as I am to have it there, but oh well.

So I found a black widow spider at my work the other day, and after a bit of epic flailing with various plastic containers managed to capture it.
I think I'll call her Vera.
Edit: Due to popular shichahn's request, there are now pictures! As well as a short crappy phone vid of Vera spinning like a maniac. Link!

This journal doesn't really have much of a point, as I only created it so I could comment on my dumb home computer, which obnoxiously doesn't allow anonymous posting. I have incorrigible lurker tendencies. |
